Tues., Jun 9 - From there we went to Apeldoorn  to see the Paleis (Palace) Het Loo, build in the later 1600's, where we became better acquainted with Dutch Royalty. (above) This peacock welcomed us! (above right) The palace buildings, after passing through the stables, etc. and a long tree lined driveway. (right) Eating Tompouce (Danish pastry--delicious) with an Orange topping to honor the Orange family.

(below) One of the first cars owned by the family.

(below right) A gift from the Italian government while touring their country!
More pictures of the Holland leg of our 25-years-in-the-Philippines celebration/vacation in Holland and Germany.

(above) Mon., June 8 - Mary (Laura's co-worker in the early '70s) took us over one of the dykes, this one 29 km's, with fresh water on both sides (due to another dyke further north).

(left) Picnicking again...a bit chilly but sunny.

(lower left) Then on to Ampie's Berg (mountain), a one-man hobby--many flowers already but many more coming. (lower right) Yes, a fragrant rose bush in the garden!
(above) A most unique flower--3 in one really!

(above right) Mon., Jun 8 - The evening meal with a BCM missionary family, Carolina and her family. (right) Her two daughters entertained us with a wonderful concert. Some were songs we all knew--some sang them in English and others in Dutch!

Tues., Jun 9 - (below) We stayed at the BCM camp, De Herikon (The Lord Reigns). (below right) Eating a picnic breakfast in the Camp Office.
(above) Looking toward the far end of the palace gardens. (above right) Looking from the top of those colonnades toward the palace buildings.

(right) Our transportation from the palace back to the parking lot!

(below) A monument to the Canadian government (army) for their part in liberating this particular town during World War 2 (sorry, name of town forgotten).

(below right) Introduction to a Dutch Pancake--wow! Filled the entire large dinner plate and delicious!
Wed., Jun 10 - (top left) In front of Mary's friend, Han, showing her orchids in the window (quite common in Holland).

(top right) We took a train to Haarlem to visit the Corrie ten Boom museum. The watch shop is still operating. (left) The tiny door into a home with an amazing story!

(right) Laura peeking out of the entrance into the Hiding Place, very small but where 6 people hid for 2 1/2 days.

(left below) The Great Church where Corrie's family attended.

(right below) Inside the church looking toward the pipe organ where both Handel and Mozart played. A university music major was playing when we were there.

(left below) We were ushered by one of the guides to sit in the Queen's Seat (where she sat last November).

In the plaza outside, Ruth found another cow. It says "I love cows." (take note: short sleeves!)
(above) Wed., Jun 10 - We took the train back to Hoorn. (left) A common scene at all train stations--flowers galore for sale. (below) Another common scene--bicycles galore. People ride them to the train station, park, ride, and pick them up when they return home to ride home again from the train. (below right) A not-quite-so-common scene at a train station--Milk Maids arriving for a Cheese Market program later that day in Hoorn.
Thurs., June 11 - Back to Amsterdam to tour the Rijks Museum, home to many pieces of the Dutch Masters during the 16th century. (above) There was a long line to get in.

(above left) Standing in front of the I Amsterdam sculpture in Museum Square.

(left) Tasting a Dutch speciality--krokets, crunchy on the outside and almost runny on the inside!

(below) That night back in Hoorn, we happened upon the conclusion of a 4-Day Walk during which elementary students and their families walk through the town four evenings in a row. School bands also join them. Since it was the final evening, students received flowers, candy, and other treats (below left).
Thurs., Jun 11 - 8:30 AM the weekly Hoorn Cheese Market began, put on mainly for tourists--what fun! (above left) The Cheese Carriers, each pair with 8 cheeses weighing a total of 129 kilos! (above) Loading purchased cheese into wagon. (left above) Loaded wagon ready to leave. (right) Friends of Mary selling their cheese. (right above) Celebration of a successful Cheese Market by the Milk Maids!
Fri., Jun 11 - Went to Zaanse Schans, a model of a country village of yesteryear. (above left) Saw how wooden shoes were made; (above) A place where there used to be 1100 windmills!

(left) On the way home, we enjoyed a McDonald meal with the 3 dogs!

(below) A beautiful home in Hoorn with the somewhat typical decorative partial thatched roof.
More pictures of our trip next week, on to Germany!
Sat., Jun 27 - (above left) At work in the place where the VOICE curriculum is stored. These two helped us reorganize in order to fit two more modules--hot and dusty work!

(above right) Happy Birthday to Baby (our live-in helper); we celebrated by eating out together.
